Deep Run East Members Discuss Vacations with a Purpose on 98.1 WOGL

(June 2007) – On Sunday, May 20, 98.1 WOGL’s Philadelphia Agenda host Brad Segall interviewed Barb Rice and Duane Bishop of Deep Run Mennonite Church East of Bucks County on the topic of “Vacations with a Purpose” and the church’s varied mission outreach.

The Deep Run East church community is very active in service and mission outreach locally and globally. Two such “purposeful vacations” or mission projects discussed during the radio interview were MAMA Project, Inc. of Honduras and Shelter for Life which is a program designed to assist those affected by hurricane disaster.

Deep Run East Member, Duane Bishop of Bedminster, Pa., spoke with Brad Segall on his experience with the Shelter for Life project. Through this commitment the church and local volunteers raised more than $50,000, assembled goods and traveled to labor and construct a home for a disabled Native American family in Point Aux Chenes, Louisiana. With the help of talented church members and local community support, Deep Run East was able to make this mission a reality.

According to Deep Run Mennonite Church East Pastor Ken Burkholder, "It's a real joy for our congregation to be even a small part of all that God is doing in this world by finding opportunities to reach out in loving service to others."

Another church member, Barb Rice of Quakertown, Pa., shared her close ties with the international non-profit MAMA Project, Inc. Rice has participate in MAMA mission trips traveling to Honduras more than five times and continues to be an advocate for the organization within the Deep Run East church and local community. MAMA is a ministry connecting North Americans and Hondurans to work on many of the problems that cause suffering in Honduras. The organization especially focuses on families who are living in severe poverty. MAMA is most recognized for their work with nutritional rehabilitation of severely malnourished children.

Rice also highlighted Deep Run East’s upcoming Strides for Mission 5k race which will take place in conjunction with their annual Community Fest on September 8, 2007. All proceeds from the race will directly benefit MAMA and the church’s outreach to the non-profit’s growth. All are welcome to participate in Strides for Mission and the Community Fest.
